The ‘Animaniacs’ Reboot and Other Assorted Stuff Discussion Post
Jason (Goldstar)’s “No New Animaniacs!’ Unpopular Opinion post was supposed to be him stating how he felt that Animaniacs should be left as-is and not receive a reboot–then Warner Bros. had to go and announce a reboot of the show. Suddenly, all of the comments to that post were about the reboot, thus undermining the point of the original post.
I’m personally not all that psyched for this reboot, but you guys clearly are, because the comments, news and updates about it keep coming. So we’ve decided to make a new post just for discussion about this show. Any new comments anyone has about the A! reboot should henceforth be made here instead of in “No New Animaniacs!”, and any subsequent comments regarding the A! reboot that gets posted in the Unpopular Opinions post will be redirected over to this one. So have at it, folks; personally I don’t have anything more to say about this than what I’ve stated already.

So, two things about this clip:
1. I never thought I would see a Mickey Mouse cartoon with a giant Goofy kaiju robot. It’s so nonsensical that it’s actually kind of amusing.
2. Himari is voiced by Romi Dames. It’s interesting how she was born in Japan, yet she rarely voices Japanese characters. The only other time I can think of is with Kiazuki in an episode of We Bare Bears. She’s mainly known for 3 roles: Traci Van Horn (Hannah Montana), Musa (Nickelodeon dub of Winx Club), and Lena Luthor (DC Superhero Girls 2015 and Lego DC Superhero Girls).

On Monday, a new DreamWorks show will come out on Hulu and Peacock called The Mighty Ones. It’s created by Sunil Hall (Powerpuff Girls 1998, My Life As A Teenage Robot, The Mighty B, Gravity Falls, Pickle And Peanut) and Lynne Naylor Reccardi (wife of the late Chris Reccardi) (she’s worked on The Ren And Stimpy Show, Batman: The Animated Series, Samurai Jack, Powerpuff Girls, Spongebob, The Modifiers, Wander Over Yonder, Super Robot Monkey Team Hyper Force Go, and Foster’s Home For Imaginary Friends). Here’s the description:
“The series follows the hilarious adventures of four small-but-mighty best friends: Twig (Josh Brener), Rocksy (Jessica McKenna), Leaf (Jimmy Tatro), and Very Berry (Alex Cazares). The pals live in an unkempt yard belonging to a trio of equally unkempt humans and, despite the obstacles they face, are always up for whatever life throws at them. Whether they’re soaring on soda lids, getting stuck in a ball of sticky goop, or worshipping a broken toilet, each day holds the promise of new adventures and surprises.”

I read about that, then I saw the trailer. It’s definitely…original. Doesn’t look like Shakespeare, but at least it’s not yet another reboot or revival of some 80’s or 90’s property.

According to this article, the show was originally pitched to Nickelodeon about 7-8 years ago before it was eventually picked up by Dreamworks.

The thing I find interesting with Dreamworks shows is the amount of variety they have with the type of shows. There’s obviously those based on DreamWorks movies like The Adventures Of Puss In Boots, The Epic Tales Of Captain Underpants, Dreamworks Dragons: Riders Of Berk, and Kung Fu Panda: The Paws Of Destiny, but they also have shows that tie in with live action movies (Fast And Furious Spy Racers, Jurassic World Camp Cretaceous), based on comic strips (Harvey Street Kids, renamed to Harvey Girls Forever in season 2), based on graphic novels (Cleopatra In Space), based on 80s shows (Voltron Legendary Defender, She Ra And The Princesses Of Power), and even shows based on 60s properties (The Adventures Of Rocky And Bullwinkle, The Mr. Peabody And Sherman Show). They’ve also dipped into preschool programming with shows like Where’s Waldo 2019, DreamWorks Dragons: Rescue Riders, as well as the upcoming Doug Unplugs (based on a children’s book). I think The Mighty Ones is the first completely original DreamWorks show not based on an established property (even stuff like Kipo And The Age Of The Wonder Beasts is based on a webcomic, while Trollhunters and its sequel shows are based on the creator’s books).

File this under “Too Little, Too Late”.
Of course several fans are going to get happy slacks thinking that this could or will lead to a permanent format change, though they should know by now that this won’t be the case, as an all Boomer/Gen-X rewind channel wouldn’t survive 2 years in the current media market. Do I need to remind y’all about Cartoon Network’s Thanksgiving Toon-In circa the mid-90’s, wherein CN (whose schedule was about 90% Hanna-Barbera reruns at the time) got their collective asses handed to them by Nickelodeon’s Non-Stop Nicktoons Weekend? If the all-classics format had been scoring Warner Media money, ratings and eyeballs, then they wouldn’t have rebranded in the first place.
At this point Boomerang should just put a timer on the screen to count down the days until the TV channel shuts down and the online streaming service gets absorbed into HBO Max.

I don’t know how many kids will want to watch a bunch of shows that originally aired before they were born, but this should be a treat for Gen Xers and Boomers who can re-live the days when Boomerang was a throwback to old-school Cartoon Network, for one weekend anyway. This may not bring in huge ratings for the channel, but perhaps that’s not the intent. Anyone who wants the experience of old-school CN all the time should just subscribe to Boomerang’s streaming service. Five dollars per month isn’t a lot of money if one wants a taste of retro goodness. You just know that WarnerMedia will be running ads for HBO Max all during this event.

Jorge Gutierrez and Sandra Equihua are mainly known for creating El Tigre and working on The Book Of Life. However, there’s some other stuff with them I want to point out. The first is a Disney pilot from 2010 called Carmen Got Expelled. It’s about Carmen, a girl who’s constantly expelled from schools, and she only gets one more chance. The show was apparently rejected since Disney wanted Carmen to be a white girl who follows the rules, not a well meaning trouble maker.

The second is an upcoming limited series called Maya And The Three. It’s part of Jorge’s current deal of producing content for Netflix.

I like with Doug Langdale’s shows have evolved over the years. The first show he created (or in this case co-created) is Earthworm Jim, a very solid action comedy. The second is The Weekenders, a very fun, slice of life show. Then we get Dave The Barbarian, a hilarious medieval comedy. Then we have The Adventures Of Puss In Boots, an epic action comedy on Netflix that takes place before the 2011 Puss In Boots movie. It’s pretty fun to watch. His current show (another co-creation) is the DreamWorks show Cleopatra In Space, a sci fi action comedy that’s based on a graphic novel. Similar to Puss, it’s also a story driven show that has a heavy comedic influence. It’s currently on the Peacock streaming service in America, though it came out in other countries roughly a year ago.

It was recently announced that a Darkwing Duck reboot is currently in development for Disney+, and is produced by Seth Rogen’s production company. Some people have been speculating about the possibility of a Darkwing Duck reboot given his presence on DuckTales 2017 (to the point that the most recent 1 hour long special is called “Let’s Get Dangerous”, though it still builds off of what DuckTales’ season 3 arc has been doing). I’ve heard some people who think that Francisco Angones (a huge fan of the character) would’ve been involved with this, but as mentioned, this show is still in development.

So, I found this rather interesting article that talks about how The Muppets have always been seen as “a boys club” due to the lack of diversity, and it also talks about how poorly Disney has treated the Muppet performers. I do wish this also talked about the Muppet Babies cartoons, though they have a more niche audience, so I can understand not talking about them.

I don’t have Hulu, but I’ve been seeing clips of the new A! on YouTube and I’ve been reading the reviews. Peoples’ general impressions of the show so far have been mixed.
I don’t think the bits about cancel culture, political correctness and gender-neutral bathrooms were really necessary (though they’re not enough for me to want to throw a fit and rant about SJWs like some folks on the internet), I didn’t think they needed to remove Hello Nurse and change Dot’s signature cuteness to possessing ‘wit’, but again, neither of those things are deal breakers for me; I do however lament the absence of Slappy (she was the best character on the show after the Warners, IMO) and I’m not really sure how long the show can stay fresh and interesting with just the Warner sibs and Pinky and the Brain, but it looks really nice, so there’s that. Bringing all of this full circle, I can see why Jason wasn’t too keen on a A! revival, the post that seemed to spawn all of this, in the first place. Some things are just best left in the eras they thrived in.
Not bad so far, just not lightning striking twice like the producers were hoping.

There are a couple of choices that the producers of this A! reboot have made that leave me scratching my head:
Why is Dot no longer “the cute one” and now “the witty one”? What was wrong with Dot being cute? That’s how she described herself. She’s wasn’t objectifying herself, and since when is “cute” an insult? I genuinely don’t understand the thinking behind that decision. I kind of understand the producers not bringing back Hello Nurse. It was a harmless joke, for the most part, and keep in mind that Yakko and Wakko are just kids, so nothing was ever going to come of their flirtation. Oh well, it’s not like Hello Nurse did very much on the show anyway. And Minerva Mink? Who needs her? Only horny furries liked Minerva and not for any artistic reasons. Of course, someone could always develop Minerva and give her some other dimensions besides just her being shallow and (allegedly) hot.
Also, it strikes me as odd that A! new producers decided to drop every recurring segment on the original show except for two. When I found out that Slappy Squirrel wouldn’t be returning, my enthusiasm for this reboot was already cut in half. I didn’t love every segment on the original show, but if they weren’t going to bring any of the old ones back, why not make some new ones? It just seems odd for a show that was designed from the get-go to have an ensemble cast to suddenly be reduced to only two of the regular/recurring segments. My chief concern is that the Warners and Pinky and the Brain may risk being over exposed if they’re all there is to the show. This is especially true in the case of the latter, as I never felt that P&tB needed their own spinoff series to be begin. They’re OK in small doses, but they don’t have a lead characters’ aura.
Some people seem to be digging the reboot so far, but it doesn’t look like it’s going to set the world on fire like the first series did. Going back to what I said way back when I typed that segment of Unpopular Opinions; it would be hard to replicate the success of something like an Animaniacs, as A! succeeded through a very specific set of circumstances that couldn’t be replicated. The reboot isn’t bad, but it doesn’t look like this will make a huge cultural impact the way that the original show did. So far, I haven’t heard anyone saying “This reboot sucks!” or anything, so there’s that.

I’m assuming the show is taking the route of Muppet Babies 2018 in starting out with a specific set of core characters before eventually introducing classic characters, though it does seem done better in the former. I’d say it’s due to how both shows are different. Animaniacs is a sketch variety show. While not written in stone, a sketch comedy show means using a large cast of rotating characters since they’re just about trying to be funny and squeeze in plenty of jokes. Both Muppet Babies shows are not sketch comedies. They’re meant to tell stories that go “Here’s the conflict and moral of the episode. Here is the character or characters we’re focusing on. Here’s how they solve it. Also, add in humor.” Shows that are about a story (even slice of life, episodic shows) usually focus on a core cast of characters before eventually expanding. To give an example of how they contrast, one episode of new Animaniacs is called “Who Donut”, with Wakko trying to find out who ate his donuts. This sketch is just about squeezing in a lot of humor that relies on how desperate he is to figure out the truth, and less about a story. Compare to something like “Mystery On The Muppet Express” from Muppet Babies 2018, another mystery episode, where Animal’s stuffed toy is missing, and the episode is funny, but it’s about how he should learn to look at the details to find out what happened.
Sorry if I’m going off topic. The point is that both shows seem to go for the same idea of focusing on core characters before introducing others, but their different formats mean different executions and reactions.

Remember the DuckTales episode “Last Christmas”, where Russi Taylor voiced young Donald, and she used a voice almost exactly like the voice she uses for Huey, Dewey, and Donald? The most recent episode, “The First Adventure”, had another appearance from young Donald, where he’s voiced here by Cristina Vee (also known as Cristina Valenzuela). She’s mainly an anime and video game voice actor, but she’s also had roles such as Marinette from Miraculous Ladybug and Xochi from Victor And Valentino. She sounds really close to Russi Taylor here. If she ever takes over as the official voice of Huey, Dewey, and Louie outside the series, I wouldn’t mind.

Ever since Quack Pack (the show, not the DuckTales episode) I kind of prefer the triplets each having different voices so there’s another way to tell them apart and I also kind of like it better if Donald is the only Disney Duck who talks like that (it keeps him unique), but credit where credit is due: Cristina Vee nailed that voice. If she can replicate that sound for an adult duck, Disney could use her as a more comprehensible Donald.

I bet no one expected this. It looks like episode 6 of new Animaniacs was pulled off. Apparently, if you called up the number in the Pinky And The Brain segment (1-800-555-9999), it leads you to a number for something rather racy (a phone sex hotline). Warning ahead. Later, the episode was put back, but the message was taken out.

This is a bit troubling. On October 23, Jeffry Scott, who was the showrunner on the original Muppet Babies, sued Disney for not giving him proper credit for the 2018 series as well as supposedly stealing ideas he thought of for the 2018 series. This wouldn’t be the only time a Disney Junior show got hit with a lawsuit. In June 2018, there was a legal dispute involving Goldie And Bear, with the production company Milk Barn Entertainment (who worked on season 1) being deceived into thinking that they were cancelled after one season, and then season 2 was produced under Titmouse behind their backs. The circumstances are a bit different given how that lawsuit came out as Goldie And Bear was almost over while the Muppet Babies one came out before season 3 (which hasn’t come out yet). Still, this was not exactly good news to hear, yet the controversy surrounding this is rather quiet.

There have been various pilots produced for Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network, but I’ve never heard of one based on a webcomic. This is Harpy Gee, with the comic and pilot created by Brianne Drouhard. It definitely has a good vibe to it. One thing I find interesting is that Glen Murakami is a consultant for this short since he’s usually known for his work on DC cartoons like Justice League and Teen Titans, as well as co-creating Ben 10 Alien Force and Ben 10 Ultimate Alien. Then again, he did direct a TMNT tv special called Half Shell Heroes: Blast From The Past .

Drew Taylor, the editor for the website Collider (a reliable source), mentions DuckTales ending after season 3. We do have to wait for either Disney or the showrunners to confirm directly, but I do trust what he says. I’m not too surprised with this, what with the show moving back to Disney XD (even though the creators wanted it back there) as well as no season renewal announced. Usually these days, Disney would announce upcoming seasons before the current season starts (like how DuckTales season 3 was announced before season 2 came out, but there’s been no announcement of season 4 before season 3 came out).

Honestly, that wouldn’t surprise me, since most Disney animated series rarely go beyond three seasons (Phineas & Ferb being one notable exception). Usually, Disney just wants to have 52 episodes of a cartoon series because that way, the channel can air a different episode every week for a year without repeating. Plus, with all of the world building, cameos, shared universe and other “bigness” that’s been happening on DuckTales this season, it would make sense that this season would be the show’s last. After creating a Disney Afternooniverse, how do you top that?

Alma and her family are Puerto Rican. Diversity, so kudos for that, but beyond that, it’s just a slice of life show about a kid and her family; there’s no twist. Sounds kind of boring, but it’s not made for me, so who am I to judge?

That’s cool, I guess. Personally, I’ve never had any emotional connection with Thundarr the Barbarian. I was aware of it, and I saw a few episodes, but I prefer comedy to action overall. For me, Thundarr was just a show; I didn’t love it or hate it. If George Krstic and Jody Schaeffer want to make a new Thundarr series, more power to them.

There’s a Dreamworks movie based on the Dav Pilkey book Dog Man. It’s from the mind of Animaniacs veteran Peter Hastings. He’s also the showrunner for the 2018 Captain Underpants series, which is also based on works from Dav Pilkey.

I had no idea what Dog Man even was until about 2 days ago. Confession time: I’ve never read any of Dav Pilkey’s books; I didn’t grow up with them, so I have no emotional connection to any of these characters. I don’t get it myself, but the kids seem to like it.

‘Cause that’s what the Big Hero 6 franchise needs: more over-exposure of Baymax.
Aside from some of the Marvel stuff (here’s hoping we can finally get a good Fantastic Four movie), some of the Marvel stuff and that new Afro-centric sci-fi show, most of this is stuff that I’ve either never seen or have no interest in. Let me know when someone at Disney decides to make a new Mickey Mouse Works or a Disney Channel cartoon that’s funny.

In 2022, there will be a Pixar movie called Lightyear. It’s obviously about Buzz Lightyear, with the movie focusing on Buzz Lightyear the hero and how he came to be. Chris Evans is in the starring role. I’m guessing this is essentially going to be like Buzz Lightyear Of Star Command, but if it was made by Pixar itself instead of Disney Television Animation. Still, the movie will most likely do its own thing.

It was recently discovered that Disney veteran Tad Stones (known for Darkwing Duck) was going to have a Beverly Hills Chihuahuas show for Disney Junior. This wouldn’t be the only time he worked on a Disney Junior show since he also directed early episodes of Jake And The Neverland Pirates. It wasn’t picked up. Some clips recently surfaced.

A major project involving Chip And Dale Rescue Rangers movie is what prevented the characters from having a major role in DuckTales 2017. Series co-creator Francisco Angones said how because they were being used for a larger project, they couldn’t use them in the show. They did eventually appear in an episode, but they were never named onscreen (only being credited as chipmunks) with any dialogue just being squeaks. I’m guessing this was the project he was talking about, a live action Chip And Dale Rescue Rangers movie.

Season 3 of Muppet Babies premieres Monday January 4 on the Disney Junior channel. We’re introduced to Fozzie’s adopted baby sister Rozzie. She’s voiced by a child actress named Charlie Townsend. She’s known for voicing Mia on another Disney Junior show, TOTS.

On the upside, that’s another female character, something that the Muppet Show Players are lacking. On the down side, fans will now be wondering what became of this character in the present day. It’s been over a decade, and we’re still waiting for adult Skeeter to appear in the Muppet’s official canon.

I’m not sure that would happen. Given how the Muppet performers are treated poorly by Disney, I doubt any characters introduced in the Muppet Babies shows would become part of the regular Muppets.

The Muppets have always been behind the times when it comes to female representation, which I doubt will change anytime soon.

It’s kind of safe to say that Bloo from Foster’s Home For Imaginary Friends is a rather divisive character, mostly from how he’s such a huge jerk (especially in later episodes). Craig McCracken took to Twitter in 2017 where he mentioned that Bloo never matured like Mac did since he was still trying to treat him like a very young kid even though his idea of fun has changed when he got older. I’ve heard some people (not in this comment section though) who felt it should’ve been brought up in the show itself.

I will say that, based on this still image, it does have a different style than what Mercury Filmworks normally goes for. It’ll be interesting to see this in motion (since the company is known for shows with very fluid animation).

Thanks for that. In any case, I think I know why this was deleted. The article originally said that Lauren Faust is a character designer when Craig later clarified that she helped him develop the series, and is one of the writers.

At one point, there would’ve been a spinoff series for Tangled The Series that would’ve focused on Varian and would’ve been made by two of the show’s storyboard artists (Anna Lencioni and Kaitlyn Ritter). It was rejected. There’s a full podcast that talks about it, but if you want something quick, there’s a 12 minute video that talks about it a bit.
Given how the upcoming Disney tv shows based on movies (Baymax, Zootopia+, Tiana, Moana) will not be produced by Disney Television Animation (instead being produced by those working in Disney’s theatrical feature side), this proposed Varian spinoff probably would’ve clashed with whatever ideas they have for movie based tv shows.

I recently stumbled upon a pilot called Long Gone Gulch. It’s created by Zach Bellisimo (who’s worked on shows like Motorcity, Rick And Morty, and Victor And Valentino) and Tara Billinger (who’s worked on Mickey Mouse 2013). This pilot was funded by Kickstarter and took 5 years to make.

I’ve seen clips and trailers for this recommended to me in my YouTube feed.
One of this project’s selling points is that it’s hand-drawn animation, no CGI, which is noteworthy. I don’t know whether this is intended for kids or adults, but I will say this: boasting all hand-drawn animation in this day and age is impressive, pity the art and character designs are as ugly as a baboon’s rump.

The beginning says it’s not recommended for anyone under the age of 7. So it would essentially be a TV-Y7 rated pilot that wouldn’t feel out of place on Cartoon Network, Disney Channel, or Nickelodeon.

The works of Marly Halpern Graser are interesting in how he’s mainly known for his work at Warner Brothers Animation, yet he’s also simultaneously worked on WB projects for the 3 big kids networks. He co-created Right Now Kapow (which aired on Disney XD), co-created Thundercats Roar and Yabba Dabba Dinosaurs (the former aired on Cartoon Network and the latter has aired in other countries on both Cartoon Network and Boomerang), and wrote Batman Vs Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (it’s a PG-13 movie, the first for a Nick animated movie and an animated TMNT project, but it’s on the lighter end of the rating).

The movie Connected will now release on Netflix, and go back to its original title, Mitchells Vs Machines (given that there are 2 other Netflix projects called Connected). It was considered for a theatrical release of March 12. As a refresher, the movie is written and directed by Michael Rianda and Jeff Rowe, who both worked on Gravity Falls.
